Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky: The Seasons, Op.37b

Franz Liszt: Mephisto Waltz No.1

Robert Schumann: Kreisleriana, Op.16

Sergey Rachmaninov: Sonata No.2 in B flat minor, Op.36 (vers. rev. 1931)

Denis Matsuev has established himself as a remarkable pianistic force.

Winner of the 1998 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow and showered with awards in his native Russia, Musical Toronto's John Terauds described him giving 'one of the most spectacular displays of technical prowess mixed with brilliant playing we've seen since, well, the last time Matsuev was in town'.

Tonight's programme includes music by two of his fellow countrymen. Matsuev opens with Tchaikovsky's The Seasons, a series of atmospheric portraits for each month of the year. The concert's second half is devoted to the richly romantic world of Schumann and Rachmaninov. In between comes Liszt's Mephisto Waltz No.1, a dazzling, demoniac dance portraying a scene from Lenau's Faust.
